I'm going to have to go with Travis on this one....elf is the singular form. The 'v' is added for the plural form.
It's the Idaho spelling.
Actually, according to my sources from around the world, the acronym ELV stands for Extra-jolly Little Volunteer. I think that means that every Christmas elf can also be called an elv.
