This is a picture of our new volcano. This is an dutch oven vocano that holds charcol briquets or has an adapter that allows it to be hooked up to a gas propane tank. Today we are cooking a 3 lb roast with potatos and carrots. When it is done I will try to remember to take a picture of the meal. We are trying to become proficient at cooking w/o electricity to prepare ourselves to be more self reliant in the case of a disaster or something. This particular stove does not get hot on the ouside or bottom of the stove, but gets hot enough to use a frying pan on top; it can be adapted to be used like a grill, or as we are using it today as a "dutch oven." Once the coals cool down they can be worked into the soil and used as a fertilizer for the garden. Cool hugh?
We are hoping it was a good investment, but like anything else it will not be useful unless we go through the motions of learning how to use it. They say that you can stack several dutch ovens together. This means dinner can be cooked in the bottom oven with a desert on the top in another oven. Eventually, we hope to try that sometime. More to come.........
1 hr later------The 2nd picture is with the dutch oven removed looking down into the charcoal briquets. When we get ready to eat the food I'll do another picture.
Here is a picture of the finished product. The meat and potatos where pretty good(The meat is buried in the gravy). The carrots were way done, but I liked them regardless. The gravy turned out to be too greasy. We need to figure a way to separate the grease from the roast. It wasn't bad for our first try, but we need to get better at it.
We had to skip home after sac. mting to ck on our dutch oven. Another advantage of having this unit. We didn't want to burn down the house you know. I was amazed at how this unit actually only gets hot under the pot and the sides and bottom of the unit have very little heat. What shall we try next. I would like to see if Tam could bake a loaf of bread in it. Now, that would be awesome.

So speaking of food storage...we were thinking about getting a wheat grinder, but I think I've decided against it for now. I don't think I'm ready to start using wheat all the time. I think we can use the money toward other food storage that we need sooner.
Cool volcano stove though. A lady in our ward was telling us that you just put some briquettes on top of the lid and then you can stack the next dutch oven on top. You can stack them three high I think.
Yeah, that is what they showed in the video. It is kinda nice to think that we actually cooked the whole dinner today with just charcoal. Whoa!
When we had dutch oven night for Relief Society they made rolls and even chocolate cherry cake in it! I think they got the recipes from this website: http://papadutch.home.comcast.net
Looks like dinner was yummy!
It was a good dinner, plus the volcano was cool.
Dad, why haven't you posted about your little altercation with the police? Remember that the first step is recognizing that you have a problem.
